Movement Disorders
Involuntary movements and contractions in the muscles are called “Movement disorders” in general. These involuntary movements may be in the form of what we call “Dystonia” with a constant contraction and an inability to relax in a muscle or muscle group, as well as in the form of involuntary blinking of the eyes, involuntary retraction of the face, or trembling in the hands. Movement disorders; cause bodily posture disorder, bending, and repetitive bodily movements. Sometimes these disorders may occur as specific to only one function. Contractions that occur while writing or playing a musical instrument also fall under movement disorders.
Movement disorders can arise in people for different reasons. Genetic disorders can cause this condition, yet it can also arise as a symptom of another disease in the person. This situation can sometimes occur due to medications.
Botulinum toxin causes temporary paralysis by blocking the nerve endings, and by using this feature, it is aimed to reduce the involuntary and excessive contractions that occur in movement disorders. These involuntary and excessive contractions that occur in movement disorders can be effectively and safely controlled with botulinum toxin injections administered by an experienced neurologist. The effect usually starts within 2-3 days. The patient is called for control after 1 week, and an additional dose can be applied if necessary. Although the effectiveness varies in each patient, it usually lasts 3-6 months.
